December Is for Bonding … and Business

I hate vision boards! I know, I know, WHAT? Yep, I detest them. I have a sistah-friend who relies on vision boards to keep her focused on her road to success. For me, NOPE! As a visual person, vision boards clutter my vision and cloud my judgment, thus confusing and throwing me off my road to success. I know, I know, I’m different, and thank you for noticing! 🙂

You see, I like order and organization. I’m not Monica from Friends!

Yet, I’m not Monica’s secret closet, either. I’m a good mix between the Monica everyone loved in spite of and the closet she guarded so well. Therefore, vision boards don’t do it for me. As aging continues, life gets busy, and memories fade, LISTS are my thing!

Lists are neat, orderly, and to the point. There are no pictures causing distractions or extra work needed to create them. I simply write it, refer to it, and check off each completed item.

Fun fact – I do enjoy vision board parties. 😀

So yes, while vision boards are NOT my thing, everyone should have some type of guide for their future. As Ben Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you ARE planning to fail.”

Ending National Entrepreneurship Month, we are sliding right into National Write a Business Plan Month. How apropos! A business plan is a living document that SHOULD be updated annually as each business changes and grows. Business owners, it’s that time! I know, right before the holidays and such. If you get it done now, you’ll have more time for bonding with friends, family, and loved ones during this ♫ MOST wonderful time of the year! ♫ 😀

If you want to be a business owner, you will need a business plan of some sort. Your first business plan doesn’t have to be as intense as what you see on SBA’s website. However, you need a document that answers the following business questions:

  • What do you want to sell?
  • Why do you want to sell it?
  • Who will it help?
  • Who is your competition?
  • What makes your business different (unique selling point)?
  • How will your business be funded?

These are the basic questions, whether rhetorical or otherwise.

So! Do you still want to be a business owner? If so, get to writing and researching! Start now, and by January 1, 2024, you’ll be READY TO WIN! And yes, your first business plan can be a vision board if that helps you get started.

After you’ve gathered the information, if you need help organizing/writing or want someone to proofread your business plan, contact me. As the owner and sole soul of Writing Waves, I’ve written one of these before. 🙂
