Feelings are an individual’s responses or reactions to situations we find ourselves in after being hit with new information.
They say, “You can’t choose your feelings,” or “you feel what you feel.” Well, the famed rapper Too Short says, “Don’t fight the feeling.” Though his song is quite sexual in nature, his title is perfect. Own your feelings, don’t fight or ignore them. Own that whatever information recently received has affected you in a pleasant or unpleasant way. Own that the new information has changed you either momentarily, briefly, or for the rest of your life.
When we give more focus to the facts surrounding the information received instead of how such information affected us, we then possess the power to choose what we feel about the situation. Possessing such power allows us to appropriately choose our reactions and responses.
Once we regain self-control over our reactions & responses, we tend to make better personal decisions. These possibly positive outcomes all derive from our feelings not being suppressed, but acknowledged, addressed, and accepted within ourselves.
Facts will always be more important than feelings when we are hit with an unplanned circumstance. It’s important to give more attention to the facts of the matter before addressing your feelings.
